Project Overview: Interactive 3D Brain Visualization
This project involved the development of an advanced interactive 3D brain visualization tool for GrayMatters Health, a company at the forefront of clinical neuroscience. The primary objective was to create a system that could take complex electroencephalography (EEG) data and render it as dynamic, understandable 3D visualizations of brain activity. This tool empowers clinicians and researchers by providing a more intuitive way to analyze brain patterns, identify anomalies, and track changes over time, ultimately aiding in diagnosis and treatment planning for various neurological conditions.
The system was designed with a user-centric approach, ensuring that clinicians could easily navigate the 3D brain models, customize data displays, and interact with the visualizations to gain deeper insights. The integration of real-time EEG data streams was a key component, allowing for live monitoring and analysis.
Key Features & Technologies
The 3D brain visualization tool boasts several key features designed to enhance clinical utility and research capabilities:
- Real-time 3D Brain Visualization: Dynamic rendering of brain activity based on live or recorded EEG data, presented on an anatomically accurate 3D brain model.
- EEG Data Integration & Mapping: Sophisticated algorithms to process and map multi-channel EEG signals onto the cortical surface, highlighting areas of interest.
- Interactive User Interface: Clinicians can rotate, zoom, and section the 3D brain model, select specific EEG channels or brain regions, and adjust visualization parameters (e.g., color maps, activity thresholds).
- Temporal Analysis Tools: Features to play back EEG activity over time, compare different time segments, and identify event-related potentials or abnormalities.
- Cross-Platform Compatibility: Developed using Unity, allowing for deployment on various platforms accessible to clinicians.
- Data Export & Reporting: Capabilities to export snapshots, video recordings of brain activity, or summary data for reports and presentations.
The core technology stack included Unity3D for the rendering and interaction engine, C# for programming the application logic and data processing pipelines, and specialized libraries for handling EEG data formats and neuroimaging standards.
Impact & Contribution
The interactive 3D brain visualization tool has provided GrayMatters Health with a powerful new way to engage with complex neurological data. It has streamlined the process of interpreting EEG results, facilitating better communication between clinicians and patients, and supporting ongoing research efforts. My role encompassed the full development lifecycle, from conceptualization and UI/UX design to programming the core visualization and interaction features, and integrating the EEG data processing modules.
