Project Overview

Kibbutz AR Tour is an augmented reality experience that brings to life the rich history and cultural heritage of Kibbutz Zikim, offering visitors and residents alike a chance to explore the kibbutz's past through immersive technology.

Kibbutz AR Tour Experience

Founded in 1949, Kibbutz Zikim has a storied history that spans the early days of Israel's establishment to its present role as a thriving community. This AR tour project uses spatial computing to preserve and share the collective memory of the kibbutz, allowing visitors to see historical photos, videos, and stories at the exact locations where they occurred.

Historical Context

Kibbutzim (plural of kibbutz) are collective communities in Israel that were traditionally based on agriculture but have evolved significantly over the decades. These communities played a pivotal role in the establishment of the state of Israel and represent a unique social experiment combining socialism, Zionism, and pioneering spirit.

Kibbutz Zikim, founded in 1949, sits near the Gaza border and has a particularly rich history of agricultural innovation, security challenges, and cultural development. As younger generations move away from traditional kibbutz life and the original founders age, there is an urgent need to preserve these stories and experiences.

Augmented reality offers a unique opportunity to preserve lived experience in a spatial context. By anchoring memories, testimonies, and historical events to their physical locations, we create a powerful connection between past and present that traditional documentation cannot achieve.

Key Features

  • Geo-Anchored Stories: Historical narratives and personal testimonies linked to specific locations throughout the kibbutz grounds
  • Temporal Layers: Multiple historical periods accessible through a timeline interface, showing how spaces evolved over decades
  • First-Person Narratives: AR portraits of kibbutz founders and long-time members sharing their personal experiences and memories
  • Agricultural Heritage: Interactive demonstrations of farming techniques and innovations developed at the kibbutz
  • Security Challenges: Educational content about the kibbutz's position near the Gaza border and its security adaptations over time
  • Community Life: Immersive windows into different aspects of communal living, from dining halls to childcare systems

Technical Implementation

The Kibbutz AR Tour application leverages several advanced technologies to create a seamless and engaging visitor experience:

  • ARKit & ARCore: Cross-platform AR frameworks for precise spatial tracking
  • GPS Positioning: Location-based content delivery and navigation
  • 3D Modeling: Historical reconstructions and interactive elements
  • Volumetric Video: Three-dimensional recordings of community members

The application was built in Unity with AR Foundation to ensure cross-platform compatibility. We developed a custom content management system that allows kibbutz historians to easily update and expand the tour with new stories and media. The app uses a combination of GPS, visual positioning, and SLAM technology to precisely place digital content in the physical environment.

For the first-person narratives, we conducted volumetric video capture sessions with elderly kibbutz members, creating three-dimensional recordings that can be placed in relevant locations. This approach preserves not just their words, but their presence and mannerisms for future generations.

Development Process

Creating the Kibbutz AR Tour involved extensive collaboration with the kibbutz community:

  1. Historical Research: Working with kibbutz archivists to identify key stories, locations, and artifacts
  2. Oral History Collection: Conducting and recording interviews with longtime kibbutz members
  3. Environment Mapping: Creating detailed digital maps of the kibbutz grounds to place AR content accurately
  4. Content Creation: Developing 3D models, animations, and interactive elements
  5. Community Testing: Iterative testing with kibbutz members of various ages to ensure accuracy and engagement
  6. Educational Integration: Developing supplementary materials for educational groups and tourists

Cultural Impact

The Kibbutz AR Tour project has significant cultural preservation value:

  • Preserves first-hand accounts and memories that would otherwise be lost with the passing of older generations
  • Creates an engaging way for younger Israelis to connect with their cultural heritage
  • Offers international visitors deeper insights into kibbutz life than traditional tours
  • Provides a model for using AR technology in cultural preservation that can be applied to other communities
  • Helps revitalize interest in the kibbutz as both a historical institution and a living community

By creating this spatially anchored digital archive, we're ensuring that the unique story of Kibbutz Zikim and the broader kibbutz movement will be accessible to future generations in a form that goes beyond traditional documentation.
